If you're looking for a challenge that combines endurance, strategy, and a unique journey through the heart of America, the Missouri River 340, commonly known as the MR340, may be the event for you. Held annually, this legendary race is unlike anything else in the world, drawing paddlers from all over the globe for a test of physical strength and mental resilience.

The MR340 is a 340-mile paddling race across the state of Missouri, from Kansas City to St. Charles, along the Missouri River. It is the longest nonstop river race in North America.

Participants have 85 hours, just over 3.5 days, to complete the course, paddling through both day and night, across towns, farmland, and remote wilderness.

The event was founded in 2006 by Scott Mansker of Rivermiles, LLC, and it has grown steadily in popularity. It’s open to all types of paddle-powered boats, including kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, and even outrigger canoes.

The race typically takes place in late July, taking advantage of the long summer days and warm river temperatures, and is timed to roughly coincide with a full moon for nighttime paddling. The starting line is at Kaw Point Park in Kansas City, where the Kansas and Missouri rivers meet. The finish line is in St. Charles, Missouri, known for being the starting point of Lewis and Clark’s westward expedition. Checkpoint towns along the route include Lexington, Waverly, Glasgow, Jefferson City, Hermann, and Klondike, among others.

The race is unique for a myriad of reasons. It has a nonstop format, which means it’s a continuous race and participants must strategize their sleep, food, and paddling breaks. There is also an “unsupported class” where racers carry everything they need without assistance from a “ground team.” Despite it being a race, the MR340 is known for its camaraderie, from the racer to the volunteers to the spectators, there is an unmatched welcoming and supportive atmosphere.

Participants must prepare in advance for the race due to its length and time. Multiple long-distance paddling trips and training on rivers are highly recommended to ensure that racers can physically handle the requirements of the experience. Gear varies per person, but all racers will have a boat, lights for night paddling, navigation tools, and hydration and nutrition supplies.

Most participants will have a ground crew that meets them at the checkpoints to supply gear, food, and support. Particularly challenging aspects are the summer heat, the fatigue of all-day paddling, and sleeping on the river. Despite this, the race is highly organized and safe, with mandatory health checks along the way.

The MR340 is more than a race; it's an epic journey. Whether you're paddling across the state, supporting from the shore, or just watching from afar, this event offers a remarkable glimpse into the power of human endurance and the natural beauty of America’s longest river. If

you’re ready for the challenge, the Missouri River is waiting. To find out more, check out mr340.org.
